Behind The Name
Since an early age, I had always had an interest in photography, regularly burning through Kodak disposable cameras as a child capturing moments throughout life, and later upgrading to a Polaroid camera to continue collecting happy snaps. My Interest in photography got serious in 2003 when I studied black and white photography at college, and I was lucky enough to have a Pentax ME Super SLR passed down to me from my Grandad, which he had owned since new in 1987. In 2006 I went on to university, but decided to nurture my passion outside of the academic arena and focus on other talents which would later complement each other. I continued to experiment with my SLR well into the early 2010s, but with the reduced availability of film, and ever increasing prices of film, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to a DSLR, and the Canon 550D was my camera of choice in 2012. The DSLR was a real work horse, despite the crop sensor, it was used regular for a variety of subjects including; product, event, pet, automotive, architectural, landscape and night time photography. Having been a Canon user for many years, i was well invested in the brand, and when it came to uprgading in 2018, the Canon 6D mkii was my choice. This was largely because of the full frame sensor and the flip-out screen which would make low level work a lot easier, as well as opening up access to a superior quality of glass found in Canon’s L-series lenses. This would lend itself well enhancing the subjects of landscape and nature, and experimenting more with astro, aviation and sport. From 2019 onwards, I was attending 5-6 weddings a year, and this dramatically increased once through the global pandemic. Now I’ve attended dozens of weddings in various capacities and gained a wealth of experience in wedding photography. I instantly knew too that if I did this for a living then I’d never have to work a day in my life again. There’s just something about capturing the love between a couple that’s so pure that fills your soul with joy. I still shoot with a DSLR, but with the latest technology going mirrorless, I didn’t want to forget my roots and remember the mechanical past, so with that ethos, the brand name Crystal Prism Photography was created. The name itself is forged from the elements of traditional 35mm film which would use a coating of silver nitrate crystals that would react to light when exposed, and also prism component inside a SLR’s viewfinder which enables you to see through the lens, almost like a periscope. So the name Crystal Prism Photography is a subtle nod to the early days of photography and when I first started back in 2003.
